Address for Correspondence: Dr. Sameer Sathe, HIG A-16, PCMS Campus, Peoples Medical College, Bhanpur, Bhopal (MP), Pin 462037, India. E-Mail: [email protected] Introduction: Metopic suture is present between developing frontal bones. It disappears approximately by 2-3 years and latest by 8 years of age. The persistence of this suture is termed as metopism. It may persist normally without any clinical implications. However, it may be confused with skull fracture in Post mortem studies or on imaging studies. Clinically it may be present in few genetic or metabolic disorders. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 70 human adult dry skulls. The skulls were inspected at the Norma Frontalis for the presence of the Metopic suture. The sutures were classified as complete and incomplete types. Observations and Results: Out of 70 skulls studied, a complete metopic suture was found in 2 skulls (2.85%), whereas an incomplete suture was observed in 3 skulls (4.28%).The remaining 65 skulls (92.85 %) of the skulls did not show any metopic suture. Conclusion: The present study showed the incidence of metopic sutures in adult skulls of central India. The present study is clinically useful in the fields of Radiology and Medicolegal purposes.

Persistent Metopic Suture in Adult Skulls of Andhra Pradesh
Majority of Skull bones are held together by fibrous joints termed as sutures. At birth the two halves of frontal bone remain separate as the metopic suture which is replaced by bone at about 2 years. The persistence of this suture beyond 8 years of age is termed as metopism. The study was conducted on 90 adult human dry skulls. Among them 55 were obtained from department of anatomy RIMS Ongole...

Background: The sutural bones and fontanelle of the skull display unique morphological characters. Sutural bones are also called supernumerary bones or ossicles or Wormian bones (WB). These are irregular and develop from the independent ossification centers present along the cranial sutures. They appear on periosteal and endosteal surfaces of the skull with variations in size, number, shape, an...

Introduction Frontal bone of the skull develops in two halves during the fetal life separated by the metopic suture. The suture normally disappears soon after the birth [1]. The persistent complete metopic suture extending from the nasion to bregma is called metopism [2]. Lambda represent the meeting point of the sagittal and lambdoid suture. It represents the site of posterior median fontanel ...

Materials and methods This study included 300 human adult skulls, which were obtained from the Forensic Osteology Research Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University. The metopic suture and supraorbital ridge were observed macroscopically. The degree of supraorbital ridge was classifi ed into 4 levels. The 1st level had a massive prominence, the 2nd showed fair prominence, the 3rd indic...
متن کاملAssociation between frontal sinus development and persistent metopic suture.
BACKGROUND Frontal sinuses are 2 irregular cavities, placed between 2 lamina of frontal bone. Expansion continues during childhood and reaches full size after puberty. Persistent metopic suture is one of the factors that are related to abnormal frontal sinus development. In this study, we want to discuss about the coexistence of persistent metopic suture and abnormal frontal sinus development u...
